Can I stay in the house during an addition?

Usually yes. We seal the work area off from the rest of the house, run the loud work during the day and clean up at the end of it. There are a few days on most jobs, normally when the roof or an exterior wall is opened up, that are harder, and we tell you about those in advance.

Will the addition match the rest of the house?

That is most of the work. We match siding profile, window proportion, roof pitch and trim detail, and on older homes we look at what can be reused so the new part sits right beside the old.

Do I need architectural plans before I call you?

No. If you already have drawings we will work from them. If you do not, we can bring in an architect and a structural engineer and start from a conversation about what you want.

Do you handle permits and inspections?

Yes. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections as part of the job, and we tell you where the project stands at each sign off.

What home additions involves

An addition is two jobs at once. There is the new structure, and there is the work of tying it into a house that is already standing, already lived in and rarely square. We build second story additions over an existing ranch or cape, rear extensions off a kitchen, bump outs for a bathroom or a mudroom, and garage additions with living space above.

The first thing we look at is what is holding the house up now. A second story needs the existing walls and footings checked by a structural engineer. A rear extension needs its own foundation and a plan for where the two roof lines meet. Once that is settled we can talk about siding, window proportion and trim, so the finished house does not read as an old part with a new part stuck to it.

Most families stay in the house while we build. We seal the work area off, keep the dust on our side of it and clean the site at the end of the day.
